Gloria Miller, Friend of Hollywood Ballroom, Updated

5:31 PM CC

Hollywood Ballroom has lost a long-time dancer and friend.  Gloria Miller passed away on September 5, 2024, surrounded by her loving family, following a period of illness.

Gloria was a “regular” at Hollywood Ballroom going back to the 1990’s when Bobbie Fries owned the ballroom.  She volunteered for planning special events such as National Ballroom Week, holiday parties, etc.  She and her many friends had their own regular table and spent countless happy hours dancing and socializing.

Most recently as of late 2022, she was a regular Tea Dance volunteer, preparing refreshments and collecting admissions, and, of course, dancing.  We will especially miss her quick wit, friendly conversation, and her East Coast Swing Leads.  Rest in peace, Gloria.  We will miss you.

Funeral arrangements detailed here.

Here is a nice photo of Gloria at a family reunion.

Updated COVID Policy effective April 16, 2023

4:25 PM CC

Effective April 16, 2023, Hollywood Ballroom will no longer require proof of Covid vaccination for any of our events.

This decision has been reached after careful consideration and collaboration with our management team and our customers.  The primary reasons are:

1) According to this website
https://montgomerycountymd.gov/covid19/data/  all health indicators are “Low”;

2) The Ballroom has an excellent air-handling system equipped with sterilizers and MERV-13 filters that run constantly;

3) Dancers can still wear masks as they wish, and free hand sanitizers remain available.

Parking Changes – Updated Dec 2022

2:55 AM BR

 Parking Changes

Effective Monday, December 5, 2022, we will temporarily experience a partial road closure.  The one-way drive lane behind Zips Dry Cleaners, to the corner of Industrial Parkway will be closed.  No driving or parking will be allowed in along the front of the Ballroom.  The sidewalk will be available for accessing the front door.

On Monday, December 5, 2022, workers will begin expanding the current fence to the edge of the sidewalk.  Once blocked off, the crew will begin work to install underground water/sewer lines that will service the new construction.  This work is anticipated to continue until January 13, 2023.

For our customers, this likely means different access to the parking lot.  As shown by the red arrows in the diagram below, entry to the parking lot will be via Tech Road or Industrial Parkway.

We regret this inconvenience, but are hopeful that once the road is re-opened, we will have some of our frontline parking restored.  And longer term, once the new Shopping Center opens, parking will be abundant and convenient.  Thank you for your patience.

Tommy Smith aka “Mr. Mambo” leaves a legacy

The dance community has lost a respected and remarkable member with the passing of Tommy Smith aka “Mr. Mambo” on June 13, 2022. Tommy Smith, President of Mr. Mambo Productions, started the legendary “Mr. Mambo’s Salsa Social,” perhaps the largest and longest running Salsa social in the DMV. He was a talented, enthusiastic dancer whose contribution to dancing will long be remembered.

A video of Tommy Smith dancing can be seen here.

Below is a tribute to Tommy from the Mr. Mambo Facebook page.

“With a very heavy heart, WPFW ‘s Latin Flavor Classic Edition joins DC’s Latin dance community in mourning the passing of DC’s own “Mr. Mambo”: Tommy Smith. Reflected in his radiant smile, Tommy’s positivity and kindness were apparent from our very first encounters back in the mid-1980’s. He was so kind and supportive as I was only just beginning my journey of celebrating Latin music and dance, but I knew I was walking on parquet floors that Tommy had helped to pave. This 1959/60 photo shows Tommy (on the left) with his dance-duo partner, Joe Manley, at The Casbah on U Street NW (the location of today’s Ben’s Next Door restaurant) DC’s “Home of the Mambo” from 1957 until 1968. Despite his illness in recent years, Tommy’s iconic dance parties continue to flourish under the brilliant stewardship of his daughter, inspiring creativity and community to this very day. The LFCE offers its heartfelt condolences to Tanya J Smith during this time of loss. A loss surpassed only by her father’s extraordinary talent. Rest In Power, Tommy.”

Why Hollywood Ballroom is Open for Dancing during COVID

10:09 PM BR

Why Hollywood Ballroom is Open for Dancing

As the omicron covid-19 variant spreads, several dances in the Washington DC area have been suspended, but not dances sponsored by Hollywood Ballroom. Why is that?

Because Hollywood Ballroom’s space, air-handling equipment, and policies provide the safest environment possible for indoor dancing.

The Space

Hollywood Ballroom’s dance area of 5500 square feet and twelve-foot ceiling is huge: 66,000 cubic feet of space for dancing alone, not to mention the entry areas, bar space, studio, and restrooms, which adds another 48,000 cubic feet for those areas. Hollywood is not outdoors, but it’s a pretty good simulation of one.

The Equipment

Hollywood’s air-handling equipment constantly sanitizes the air. There are two separate HVAC systems constantly circulating air even when not heating or cooling. Their fans are never turned off. Each system is installed with four, 46-inch Ultra Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) tubes that sterilizes airborne bacteria and viruses, including Covid-19. In addition, each system has six, 24×18 inch MERV-13 air filters installed, which are changed every three months. The last change was December 30, 2021. A 1/4 horsepower, roof-mounted fan continuously extracts air from each restroom to the outside. Every table in Hollywood Ballroom has a Purell hand sanitizer pump.

The Policies

Hollywood Ballroom’s policies also discourage the spread of Covid. Every person attending a public dance at Hollywood Ballroom must be vaccinated for Covid-19, and show proof of such. Contact information is retained. Masks are required. Even before Covid, and always, anyone not feeling well is encouraged not to attend. Entrance fees are not collected in advance, eliminating the incentive to attend because a ticket was already purchased.

The Results

No business can guarantee that no one will contract Covid, but given its environment, equipment, and policies,  Hollywood Ballroom remains a safe place to dance. That’s why it remains open.
